Solar is an effective way to make better use of land, strengthen long-term income and switch to a renewable energy source to support sustainability targets for many farmers and landowners. However, one challenge has continued to hinder progress: grid connectivity.
Connecting a solar panel system to the electricity grid can be difficult and sometimes expensive which has become an obstacle for farmers and landowners trying to move forward. Fortunately, the latest UK grid connection reforms are designed to change that.

This means early feasibility is essential. Before assumptions are made about possible income, scale or timescales, grid position must be properly understood.
The UK Government, Ofgem and the National Energy System Operator have announced reforms intended to make the grid connections process more focused and efficient.
Historically, the process has often worked on a “first come, first served” basis. This meant projects could hold a place in the queue even if they were not ready to progress. As more renewable energy, battery storage, data centres and large energy users sought connections, the queue became increasingly congested.
The new approach is intended to prioritise projects that are ready, strategically aligned and able to support the UK’s clean power goals. Projects that are not progressing, sometimes described as “zombie” projects, are expected to lose their ability to block more viable schemes.
This could help unlock cleaner energy projects more quickly and give developers, landowners and energy users greater confidence in the process.
Realistically, reform does not mean every solar project will suddenly receive a fast or affordable grid connection. Local capacity will still vary, some areas will remain constrained and some projects may still require network upgrades. Planning, land suitability, project scale and commercial structure will all continue to play a significant role.
However, it is clear that the system is moving towards a more planned, purposeful model where viable clean energy projects have a better chance of progressing.
Over time, these reforms could create new opportunities for farmers that own large pieces of land. If connection queues become more efficient, suitable projects may be able to move forward with greater certainty.
A clearer connections process may also help landowners understand earlier whether a project is likely to work as a grid export scheme, whether it needs to be scaled differently, or whether an alternative route should be considered.
