P.D. Hook Hatcheries installs a 100.05 kWp roof-mounted Solar PV system.
P.D. Hook Hatcheries has taken a major step toward sustainability by installing a 100.05kWp roof-mounted solar photovoltaic (PV) system on their operation in Cowdown, Hampshire. This initiative reflects a growing trend among UK businesses to embrace renewable energy, aiming to reduce operational costs while lowering environmental impact.
Our design team analysed the site’s energy demand and optimised the system to maximise self-consumption and ensure a swift return on investment. This site proved to be an excellent candidate for solar PV, as the energy demand for ventilating the buildings closely aligned with solar irradiance patterns.
CO₂ Emissions Reduction is >17 tonnes per year, equivalent to planting over 800 trees.
Monitoring is carried out via an online portal for real-time production and consumption data.

Aims & Objectives
With rising energy prices and growing pressure to meet environmental and ESG targets, P.D. Hook sought a long-term energy solution aligned with their operational goals and sustainable brand values.
The solar PV installation was driven by the desire to:
-
Reduce operational energy costs
-
Increase energy independence
-
Align with customer expectations for sustainability
-
Support national renewable energy commitments
Outcomes
Financial Returns: A projected return of investment of just over three years, thanks to significantly reduced energy costs.
Sustainability Impact: A major reduction in carbon emissions, positioning P.D. Hook’s Cowdown site as a flagship for environmentally conscious commercial operations
-
System Capacity: 100.05 kWp
-
Usable inverter power: 60kW
-
Estimated Annual Solar Output: >90,000kWh
-
Expected Grid Offset: 30% of annual site electricity consumption
Implementation & Installation
The 100.05kWp solar PV installation is a key component of PD Hook’s sustainability strategy and is acting as a template for similar installations at other P.D. Hook locations. This successful project showcases how renewable energy can deliver both economic and environmental gains in a commercial context while enhancing long-term resilience, improving brand value, and contributing meaningfully to the UK’s clean energy transition.

“Almost a year in and the business plan for a project from Noble Green Energy has proven to be remarkably accurate to reality with the grid electricity we are saving.”
Challenges & Solutions
Power Disruption: All power interruptions were scheduled to suit client’s activities.
Weather Delays: Poor weather conditions can cause minor installation delays. In this case the roof works started at the end of December. Flexible scheduling and welfare facility provision ensured productivity remained high.
Livestock: There was a small window in which we could install, in order to keep in line with client’s own schedules. We ensured our works program was synced with the other planned works on site. This ensured the client has no extended disruption to normal activities.
Performance
The system was commissioned on 10-01-2025. Up until 17-07-2025 it has produced:
- >61,300kWh of energy, of which 88% was consumed on site.
- It has provided 44% of all the site’s electricity in that period.
- Below is an illustration, taken from the client’s monitoring platform, of the PV system’s performance on a typical clear summer’s day.
