Noble Foods Seamer Mill Solar PV installation

Seamer Mill, near Middlesbrough, is one of several sites operated by the Noble Foods Group Poultry and Milling divisions, and is distinctive in hosting both divisions side by side.

As the renewable energy arm of the group, Noble Green Energy designed and installed a 453.18 kWp rooftop solar PV system across the site’s poultry barns, delivering clean, lower cost electricity to the whole site. The project demonstrates on our own estate the same approach we deliver for clients across the food and drink sector.

One Array, Two Business Units

The array is installed on four of the site’s six poultry barns, with the remaining two barns expected to follow once their roofs have been replaced. All generated power is fed under the site roadway into the shared mains supply at the feed mill, where most of the site’s energy is consumed. This arrangement means both the Poultry and Milling divisions obtain the benefit of the generation from a single, centrally connected array.

In its first six weeks of operation, from 1 June to 13 July 2026, the system has delivered:

  • 82.5 MWh of energy generated
  • 86% of generation consumed on site
  • 27% of the site’s total electrical demand met by solar
  • With a high self-consumption rate driven by the feed mill’s steady daytime demand, the return on investment is expected to be less than 3.5 years.
  • Module level monitoring across the array – combined with real time visibility of site consumption, it provides an accurate picture of how generation and demand interact through the day.
  • Data does more than track performance – it provides the evidence base for evaluating the extension of the array to the remaining two barns.
  • The customer is also considering a battery energy storage system (BESS) – this would capture surplus generation and lift self-consumption and the solar share of demand even higher.
  • System Specification:
  • System size: 453.18 kWp installed across four poultry barns, with two further barns to follow
  • Modules: 996 x Canadian Solar CS6.2-48TD-455 (1500 V)
  • Power optimisers: 498 x SolarEdge S1000
  • Inverters: 2 x SolarEdge SE100K (100 kW) and 2 x SolarEdge SE66.6K (66.6 kW)
  • Total Installed Capacity: 453.18 kWp
  • AC Power: 333 kW
  • Estimated Annual Generation: 448.36 MWh
  • Grid Offset:
  • 86% self-consumption
  • Covering 27% of total site demand
  • Monitoring data supporting the evaluation of further solar PV and battery storage
  • Module level monitoring and optimisation across all panels

Seamer Mill shows how a well sited rooftop array can serve an entire multi-divisional site from a single connection point.

  • By feeding the generation into the shared supply at the feed mill, the system delivers value to both the Poultry and Milling divisions.
  • With two further barn roofs still to come and battery storage under consideration, informed by the site’s detailed monitoring data, there is a clear route to lifting the solar contribution well beyond its current 27 percent of site demand.
…Noble Green Energy is proud to be contributing to the carbon reduction ambitions of the Noble Foods Group, and to those of the food industry as a whole. Delivering projects like this on our own estate demonstrates the same commitment we bring to every client site….
