In September 2024, CHEP enlisted Noble Green Energy for Solar PV solutions to reduce carbon usage and cut electricity costs at their Severnside, Bristol site. This initiative reflects a growing movement among UK commercial businesses to embrace renewable energy, aiming to cut operational costs and reduce environmental impact.

The opportunity to enhance safety and improve maintenance efficiency was taken by removing the existing fall arrest cable system and installing a new roof guard rail. The roof skylights were retained, with approved wire mesh added to ensure protection without compromising the building’s natural light performance.

With rising energy costs and increasing pressure to meet environmental targets, this commercial business sought a long-term energy solution that aligned with its sustainable brand values. The solar PV installation was driven by several key goals:

  • Reduce operational energy costs
  • Increase energy independence
  • Align with customer demand for eco-friendly products
  • Support national renewable energy objectives

Due to reduced energy costs and potential energy export income, the anticipated payback period is just over three years. It also offers a substantial reduction in carbon footprint, positioning the factory as a model of eco-friendly commercial property.

  • System Capacity: 477.94 kWp
  • Expected Output: Approx. 431 kWh annually
  • Technology Used: High-efficiency monocrystalline panels with SolarEdge inverters for DC to AC conversion and SafeDC™ technology for automatic voltage reduction for installation, maintenance, and emergency situations.

Health & Safety Considerations

The opportunity to enhance safety and improve maintenance efficiency was taken by removing the existing fall arrest cable system and installing a new roof guard rail. The system utilises ten SolarEdge inverters for DC to AC conversion and SafeDC™ technology to ensure system voltage is automatically reduced to touch-safe levels (1V DC per module) within five minutes of grid failure or inverter shutdown. This is crucial for installation, maintenance, and emergency situations.
