How does it work? Solar PV panels explained
With the UK installing more solar power than any other European country in 2014 (European Photovoltaic Industry Association), demand for solar PV is undoubtedly on the rise.
But what is solar PV and how does it work? Here are our answers to these questions plus other frequently asked queries relating to this renewable energy source.
Q. How do solar PV cells work?
A. PV cells consist of flat layers of semi-conducting material such as silicon. When light is absorbed, it creates an electric field across the silicon, which generates electricity.
Q. How is the light converted into power?
A. By using a piece of equipment known as an inverter, which plays a crucial role in any solar PV system.
Inverters turn the variable direct current (DC) output from solar panels into an alternating current (AC) that can be used at the point of generation or exported to the grid.
Q. How is solar PV energy measured?
A. Kilowatt hours (kWh) are used to measure the power produced by solar PV panels.
Q. Does solar PV only work when it’s sunny?
No. Contrary to popular belief, solar PV systems don’t need sunlight to work. Solar panels only require daylight.
Q. Where can solar PV panels be installed?
A. Solar PV systems can either be ground or roof-mounted. A ground-mounted PV system may work best for you if you want to generate income from your spare land. Roof-mounted installations enable you to make the most of your existing space by fitting panels to your buildings. A. No, not at all. In fact, it requires very little maintenance. All you need to do is ensure your panels are kept relatively clean and the environment around is monitored to prevent shadowing the panels.
Q. How long do solar panels last?
A. Most solar panels have a lifespan of 25 years or more.
